“It’s partly your own fault, you know. If you had distanced yourself from Lyndon’s position on the war a little sooner, Bobby wouldn’t have had an issue to run on.

He placed one hand on the small stack of blue folders.

“Anyway, here’s what it comes down to. Against a Kennedy-Nixon Republican ticket—can you believe it?—

you lose, sixty-five to thirty-five percent, plus or minus three, no matter who you choose as VP. We’ve got only one chance—just on the low side of even, according to the numbers. But it means someone else heading the ticket, with you as VP. If you want it.”

O’Brien pushed one folder toward Humphrey. Humphrey opened his mouth as if to argue, but spoke only one word.
